Our Florida law firm is currently investigating complaints relating to the use of the drug Pradaxa. For those at risk for non-valvular atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that causes an irregular heartbeat, Pradaxa may be helpful in minimizing the associated risk of blood clots and strokes. However, while this drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in patients being treated for non-valvular atrial fibrillation, research by our Florida Pradaxa lawyers has shown Pradaxa has also been associated with potentially fatal internal bleeding that cannot be controlled.
Dangerous Pradaxa Side Effects
There have been more than 200 reports of deaths in Pradaxa patients caused by internal bleeding, but no Pradaxa recall has yet been filed. In 2011, the FDA issued a statement saying that Pradaxa “provides an important health benefit when used as directed” and suggested that patients should continue taking the drug unless told by their doctors to stop. In many other parts of the world, however, Pradaxa warnings have been issued by the national regulating bodies in charge of medication safety after reports of bleeding and death. Additionally, Pradaxa attorneys have begun to hold Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of Pradaxa, accountable for these injuries by filing Pradaxa lawsuits.
Though Pradaxa is supposedly safe, clinical trials in the US have found that 16.4% of individuals taking this drug have experienced some degree of internal bleeding. Symptoms that may have been caused by Pradaxa include:
- Excessive or unusual bruising
- Excessive or uncontrollable bleeding
- Bloody phlegm
- Urine that is pink or brown
- Stools that are red or black
- Tar-like stools
- Blood in vomit
- Vomit that resembles coffee grounds
- Bleeding gums
- Weakness and/or swelling in the extremities
- Painful or swollen joints
