Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Exposure to asbestos can result in a diagnosis of Mesothelioma.

A diagnosis of Mesothelioma means the mesothelium, the lining around the abdominal cavity and the lungs and heart, is being affected by Asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is often challenging to treat.  Treatment of Mesothelioma varies and is based on how quickly one is diagnosed with Mesothelioma, what part of the body has been affected and how much of it has spread. Oftentimes the result of asbestos exposure is not apparent until decades after the exposure.  Mesothelioma it known to develop thirty to fifty years later.

In the later part of the 19th century as well as the early 20th century, asbestos was thought to be an material for use in the construction industry because it was fire retardant, had high electrical resistance, and was inexpensive and easy to use.

Health problems linked to asbestos

Several diseases and condition have been associated with the exposure to asbestos.

Some of these include:

  • Asbestosis.  Asbestosis is a disease of the lung.  This occurs when scarring of tissue in the lung happens from acid produced by the body.  The body produces this acid in an attempt to dissolve asbestos fibers.  The scarring sometimes becomes so severe, function of the lungs ceases. It is thought that once exposed to asbestos this condition can lay dormant for ten to years.
  • Mesothelioma.  Mesothelioma occurs when the mesothelial lining of the lungs and the chest become cancerous.  It is important to note that the is no association between smoking cigarettes and mesothelioma.  The only known cause for mesothelioma is the exposure to asbestos or like fibers. The dormancy for mesothelioma can be twenty to fifty. Mesothelioma patient have an unfortunate prognosis.  Statistically those diagnosed with Mesothelioma depart within twelve months.
  • Cancer.  Various cancers have been linked to exposure to asbestos.  Cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, larynx and kidney have all been linked to Mesothelioma exposure.  The dormancy for cancer can often be between fifteen and thirty years.
